Paul Tschetter

Paul Tschetter was born October 5, 1842, in Blumenort, Molotschna, South Russia. His parents were Jacob and Barbara Tschetter (formerly “Zetterle”), members of the Hutterite Church. Soon after he was born, his parents moved to the village of Hutterthal, where he attended the village school. In 1860 he was baptized and on November 27 he married Maria Walter. In the year 1866 he was ordained to the ministry by Rev. Peter Wedel. In the year 1868, together with several families, he founded the village of Neu Hutterthal. In the year 1874, he and his family, with four more families, left Russia for America and settled forty-five miles northwest of Yankton, South Dakota. On January 28, 1883, he was ordained as an Elder of the church by Rev. Friederich Schartner. On December 21, 1915, Maria passed away.  On November 17, 1919, Paul died of a stroke of paralysis. He was 77 years old.  He was buried November 19, 1919, in the Neu Hutterthal cemetery.
